Apple's Tablet Set to Be a Failure

Apple is an amazing company that has transformed the way that we live, but they are preparing for their biggest failure in years.

No doubt, Steve Jobs is smart, even brilliant. With the IPod he outsmarted the music industry and Sony. With the IPhone, he outsmarted Nokia, RIM and the entire telecom industry. With the tablet, he is giving in to his belief that he can now outsmart the entire computer industry and create a new class of mobile devices where they have failed.

In reality, Apple is likely to fail with the tablet for the same reason that everyone else has. These devices simply don't offer any functionality that laptop doesn't and with the size of laptops decreasing and becoming lighter, the demand for an IPhone that is too large to put in your pocket simply isn't going to be large.

I don't expect anyone to buy this thing other than the crowd of Apple followers who will buy anything that the company offers.

Jobs is about to tarnish his reputation.

I have to agree. Unless they have some kind of non backlit screen I don't see the advantage over a laptop of netbook. I think Jobs has bought into his own hype.

Apple is currently the 4th largest listed company in the US with a market cap of some $188bn. On the revenue tables it comes in at 71st. This disparity is greater than any of the other top ten aside from Google, which in my opinion is a better business than Apple.

The ecosystem of the App Store is the driving force behind the success of the Iphone. The Ipad is really an e-reader++. With the app store backing it, it may again be very successful in occupying this niche. Wait & see.
